Tribute & Message From The Family

David Kenneth Akina was born in Honolulu, Oahu, Hawaii on 10/22/1952.
He and his family moved to Campbell, California in 1957.
David graduated from Campbell High School in 1970, went on to graduate from West Valley College and then attended San Jose State with a music major.
As a professional musician in the 1970's through the 1980's he loved entertaining at weddings and private parties with bands known by the names "Mosaic", "Flavor" and "Arnold". He taught guitar and piano in the 80's at Guitar Showcase in San Jose. He then went on to grow his manufacturer's rep business in Silicon Valley's electronics industry. After 15 years he left electronic sales to become a real estate appraiser.
David was a brilliant musical composer and played keyboard, piano, guitar and ukulele throughout his lifetime.
David lived with conviction, purpose and joy making our lives better for knowing him. Among his many colleagues, friends and his relatives in Hawaii he leaves behind Julie, his beloved wife of 36 years, sisters Pamahoa Akina, brother-in-law Joseph Kleinsmith, sister Sandi Akina Saenz, sister-in-law Jenny Akina and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother George Akina, his father David Kenneth Akina Sr. and his mother Phyllis Kimiko (Shimabukuro) Akina. In lieu of flowers or monetary gifts, a donation to your favorite charity in David's honor would be lovely.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions we will plan a celebration of David's life sometime in the future. For now, we appreciate hearing from you through this Obituary. Please share your stories, photos, music and expressions of love.

Condolence & Memory Journal

I was a guitar student of David's at GC in 1980. It only lasted for a few months as we moved but I have never forgotten the things he taught me. He was so good at what he did, organized and knowledgeable. I've had several teachers since and he was the one that had the most impact for me. I have a lot of respect for him. In fact I made it a point to contact him some years ago to see how he was doing and tell him how much I appreciated his teaching. He remembered me because I bought a Les Paul that a friend of his was selling. David was 4 years my senior and I also grew up in Campbell so we may have been neighbors for a while there. I really enjoyed the memorial video, he was a remarkable man. I am so saddened that he has passed. My deepest condolences to all his family and friends. I can't imagine losing a sole like David.

What I remember mostly about David was his intellect. He loved conversation and the sharing of ideas. Our band, Mosaic came together as musicians but became lifelong friends. Even after we had moved on to other things, we still got together periodically to play poker or just hang out and enjoy each others company.

When you spend that much time together, it is only natural that you talk about everything and David always brought a clarity and perspective to every conversation. I will always regard that period as one of the best times of my life.

David was the first friend I made as a terrified Freshman at my initial Speech and Debate tournament. My performance was not stellar and I think he sensed I needed someone to talk to. Never forgot his kindness.

I have many fond memories of going to the Foghorn in San Jose to dance to the band. So talented.

Gone too soon. Rest in Peace Sir

I have so many fond memories of David. I remember how much he LOVED to take pictures of Julie, from when they were very young until this very year. He always said Julie was beautiful, and often he included me in pictures he took with Julie and I. He was a great photographer and musician. I also remember all the fun wine parties on Julie and David's back patio. David would hide all the wine bottles in paper bags so the guests did blind tastings. He was wonderful announcing winners at the end based on tastings, cost of wine and other details. He was so funny and those parties were so fun! Martin and I actually won one year for a blend we brought. Also, David and Julie and Martin and I enjoyed hiking together. Our June Lake trip just a few years ago was so fun. We hiked all day and ate and drank good wine in the evenings and enjoyed our cabins. We also hiked around and did wine tasting when they came to visit us on the Central Coast. We actually hiked through some creeks the year we had so much rain.
Wonderful memories. We celebrated birthdays eating dinner by the ocean at wonderful restaurants. Martin and David would golf on the course here where we live as well. We will always remember these treasured memories together. We will miss you David. We celebrated Christmas together often, in fact just this past December. David was waving and grinning as our car arrived in front of the house. He was happy to see us and we were happy to see him and enjoy our time with David and Julie. Jennie and Martin

David was such a warm and loving man. He had a huge heart! He sure loved music! I remember watching him play when I was just a kid! He also loved his doggies-Turbo was the last to experience his kindness. I am so sorry for you Julie, I am glad you got to travel together so much and really enjoy life before his decline. We are sending love and prayers your way!

Wow, wish I'd taken lessons from him at Showcase. He will be remembered, even by guys 10 years older in L.G. like me. Look for the beauty in all situations.
